Most people around the world have not been exposed to the real opal phenomenon. Most people have only seen opals in the form of doublets and opal triplets. These triplets are a manufactured gemstone with the appearance of a real black opal. Only the trained eye can tell the difference between a triplet opal and a solid opal. Triplets have small slivers of opal color that has been glued between a dark backing and a glass or quartz polished top. this gives the opal color a magnification and a black opal appearance.
A triplet opal will only be worth less than a tenth of a solid opal and will be a great substitute for the real thing. Doublet opals have only 2 layers and has more opal on it and can be mistaken for black opal very easily, especially if it is set in a pieces of jewelry.
Triplets were mass produced when supply was great but very few people are actually manfacturing them anymore.
