Opal Gemstones
Opals are a prestigious gemstone and alot of people have asked if opal is bad luck. The answer to that is that in the early days some diamond companies were worried that opal was going to be more popular than opal so they started to spread rumors about opal being bad luck. Of course this is untrue, It was just some people with scarcity mentality.
Opal gemstones are of the most rare and valuable in the world. Especially black opal that comes from Lightning Ridge. Boulder opal is the next best thing when it comes to high quality opal and their is still a large area of boulder opal mining country to be covered. Boulder opal being one of types of opal that can be black in body-tone has made it a world sensation and a valuable gemstone. Diamonds on the other hand are valuable because of clever marketing and not because it unique. Opal is unique and you will never find another opal the same as another. The pattern will always be different.
Gemstones are found all around the world and only few deposits are of gem quality. Just like opal in Australia, The opal here in Australia has the quality and the quantity to best in the world. 98% of the worlds black opal is found in Australia in Lightning Ridge near the Queensland, New South Wales border.
We consider opal a gem stone and not a semi precious stone because of its quality and rarity. But if the opal has no color-play it is considered a semi precious stone. This is called common opal or potch.
Opals can be set with other gemstones and can compliment each other very well. If you were to set a blue opal with a Tanzanite you would have a great match and nice piece of jewelry.
Opals are not well known around the world like diamonds are because the industry is alot smaller therefore marketing to the world is a bit harder and resources are limited for this fine gemstone.
